A frantic first lap saw Marc Marquez drop from pole to tenth place, before the world champion fought back up the order to take the lead from Valentino Rossi just before the halfway stage.

Alvaro Bautista got the better of rookie Pol Espargaro to complete the podium, with Dani Pedrosa and Jorge Lorenzo a muted fifth and sixth.

Early race leader Andrea Dovizioso slipped back to ninth place.

Danilo Petrucci was absent due to a broken wrist at Jerez, with his planned Ioda replacement Luca Scassa then breaking a femur in testing at Mugello...
