Fuel protester blockade refinery

Around 100 farmers and truckers, who were on foot, began blocked the entrance to Stanlow oil refinery at Ellesmere Port, Cheshire.

As a result, 50 fuel tankers were shut outside the plant.

Protester Tom Haughton said: "There are over 100 hauliers and farmers who have blocked the road on foot.

"I think we've got 40 or 50 tankers blocked out. There are 300 to come in tonight, so they tell us."

"The fuel companies are making massive profits, but mainly it's the Government with the tax they are taking - they're driving hauliers and farmers out of business."

A spokesman for Cheshire Police said officers attended the scene.

The refinery was the centre of the fuel protests in 2000 which caused some stations to run out of petrol.
