Sidney Taylor, of Gorleston, was given a six-point penalty and £300 fine after admitting careless driving.

A police spokesman said he would be able to drive again provided he satisfied standard conditions laid down by driving authorities.

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency said drivers had to re-apply for a licence every three years after they reached 70 and satisfy officials that there was no medical reason why they should not get behind the wheel.

A spokeswoman said people aged over 100 were known to hold licences.

Magistrates in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, were told Mr Taylor, who had been driving for 70 years and had a clean licence, had been in collision with a learner at a junction in November. No-one was hurt.

Meanwhile, pensioner drivers in Suffolk are being offered extra training.

Suffolk County Council said failing eye sight, poor health, slower reaction times and a lack of concentration can make elderly drivers more vulnerable.

Officials say their GrandDriver scheme includes discussions on mobility and health issues, a Highway Code quiz, a reaction test and an on-road assessment.
