Over the next three weeks, Ryan Hunter-Reay may be the busiest man in motorsports, flying over 15,000 miles to compete in three entirely different disciplines of race.
Starting this Friday, the American will compete in the New Zealand Grand Prix, five days before he starts his duties in the Rolex 24 at
Daytona, and all before he gets behind the wheel for NASCAR Busch Series testing.
This weekend, however, Hunter-Reay adds another string to his bow with his first race appearance in the A1 Grand Prix Series. Stepping in to the seat previously occupied by Phil Giebler, the former Champ Car pilot will attempt to steer the 'We The People' Team USA car into the points in the first event at the remodelled Taupo circuit in New Zealand. Hunter-Reay, who has never driven an A1GP car before this weekend, admits that is facing a steep learning curve, but is looking forward to the challenge.
"I can't wait to get behind the wheel - it's going to be a blast," he insisted, " This will be my first time to turn a wheel in an A1GP car, and that, coupled with it being a race weekend, will make things interesting. I'll have to adapt quickly, but I’m up for the challenge.
"A1GP runs in the normal racing off-season and attracts many established top ranked open-wheel drivers - from
F1, Champ Car, IRL, GP2 - and I want to thank Rick Weidinger for the opportunity to represent the United States. I will do everything possible to reward that confidence in me with some great finishes for Team USA."
