Oliver Jarvis finally broke Great Britain's A1 Grand Prix hoodoo with a dominant drive in the Mexico City feature race, the reigning British F3 runner-up holding off a determined Jonathan Summerton in a dash to the chequered flag for the breakthrough win.
Repaying the faith shown by the Team GB selectors for placing him in the race seat for only the second time this season, Jarvis powered off the line at the standing start and was never headed, even if Team USA pilot Summerton kept him honest throughout the 45 laps, utilising his fresher tyres towards the end of the race to haul his rival in. In the end, though, Summerton did not have enough laps and had to be content with what was still USA's best result since the first round at Zandvoort.
Jarvis swept into the lead from the off, after polesitter and race one winner Alex Yoong bogged down terribly, dropping dramatically down the order to seventh by the end of the first lap. That left Jarvis in the lead, ahead of Summerton, who made the most of Yoong holding up those behind to jump into second place, with China up to third, followed closely by Enrico Toccacelo, making an excellent start from seventh in the Team Italy entry.
Zaugg slotted into fifth, while Jeroen Bleekemolen moved up to sixth, the Dutchman taking over from Renger van der Zande as the team exercised its driver rotation policy. However, the bad luck France suffered in the sprint continued into the feature, as an impact in the first corner melee damaged Jean-Karl Vernay's car and forced the team to pit for a new nose and front wing at the end of the first lap.
As the race wore on, battles began to emerge down the order, Jarvis eking out a small lead over Summerton who, in turn, was getting a small advantage over Toccacelo, the Italian moving ahead of China on the second lap.
Portugal, having only rejoined the series in Durban, fought strongly from the start, Alvaro Parente overtaking home nation Mexico for eighth on lap four before making an impressive move on the outside of the Netherlands one lap later for seventh.
