Brands Hatch 2007: Dominant home win for Kerr.

Sunday, 29th April 2007

Robbie Kerr delivered Great Britain its third win in as many meetings after a crushing victory in front of home fans at Brands Hatch, a result that marks the first win for a nation on home soil.

Robbie Kerr delivered Great Britain its third win in as many meetings after a crushing victory in front of home fans at Brands Hatch, a result that marks the first win for a nation on home soil.

The result is also significant as it puts Great Britain in a strong position to snatch second position in the standings from New Zealand after they could only manage 16th position following a first lap clash with Ireland.

Simply making the most of his pole position from the rolling start, Kerr sprinted into the distance, covering the 15 lap distance eight seconds quicker than anyone else, his ‘nearest' rival proving Nico Hulkenberg, the German the only other driver to get close to Kerr's sub-1min 15secs fastest lap.

Enrico Toccacelo delivered Italy its first podium result since his victory at Beijing, the former F3000 race winner showing impressive pace this weekend as he bids to cement eighth in the championship standings.

Starting third but finishing fourth was Loic Duval, the Frenchman not quite able to show the kind of speed that had him pinned as Great Britain and Kerr's closest rivals earlier in the weekend. It does also mean though that reigning champions France will complete their defence with fourth in the standings.

Malaysia and Netherlands rounded out the top six points paying positions, the latter having to work hard to keep India's Narain Karthikeyan at bay after he was once again unable to make the most of his fifth place starting position. Ireland, USA and Canada rounded out the top ten to put them in prime position for points in the final race of the season.

Meanwhile, most eyes will now be on the uphill battle for Great Britain to snatch second in the standings off New Zealand, with Jonny Reid this time expected to lead the Kiwi's charge from 16th on the grid. Eighth will be enough for New Zealand no matter what Kerr does, but it nonetheless sets up an intriguing battle to entertain the home fans.
