As many as four
Formula 1 drivers are thought to be considering running teams in A1GP, it has been revealed.
Series promoter Tony Teixeira made the admission during the 2007/08 World Cup of Motorsport season finale at
Brands Hatch over the weekend, with veterans
David Coulthard and
Giancarlo Fisichella rumoured to be amongst those interested.
The
Daily Express claimed both drivers are ‘examining the business profile' of what will be A1GP's fourth season in 2008/09, when the cars are set to be both produced and powered by
Ferrari.
Whilst refusing to confirm whether Coulthard and Fisichella are contemplating getting behind a new Scottish outfit and the existing Italian squad respectively, Teixeira did acknowledge that he would ‘welcome' their involvement.
“I can't talk names, but we have had four
F1 people in touch,” the South Arican is quoted as having said. “I would welcome people like Fisi and Coulthard. We have an open door.”
Teixeira also stated that Formula 1 supremo
Bernie Ecclestone had been ‘totally dumbfounded' when he heard that Ferrari was to join forces with A1GP, adding that the 77-year-old ‘then offered respect for the deal'.
