D-Brief: Sub-Lime!

Saturday, 19th July 2008

David Brabham reflects on Patron Highcroft Racing's breakthrough ALMS victory at Lime Rock Park.

Race day was a bit up and down as well. Scott started and we'd been struggling with cold tyres, so he struggled at the start and dropped back. Then he was punted by Simon Pagenaud and got turned around, so we actually went a lap down. Fortunately, a yellow came out at exactly the right moment, with the leading Porsche not that far behind us, so we managed to keep our lap, went to the back of the queue and changed drivers.

We also had to change the rear end of the car because, when Simon hit Scott, it damaged the rear diffuser, so we made a pit-stop to change drivers, went out again, caught up to the queue, then came back in again to fix the rear end. And it was amazing, because I reckon we changed the whole diffuser and rear wing in about 40 seconds.

That kept us on the same lap and, from there on, it was a dogfight. We had to save fuel as much as we could, but we hung in there, although there was a point in the race where I thought we were going to finish second. But, again, I kept telling myself to just keep going, that something might come up.

Coming down the hill into the last corner, I saw Timo Bernhard get baulked up really badly by traffic, and I thought 'this is my chance'. I went down the main straight on the outside of him, as he was blocking to the inside, and just drove around the outside of him into Turn One - which, by all accounts, everyone thought was quite a spectacular move!

Even then, I nearly ran out of fuel - I was on 'pace car' setting for the last lap and had no idea that Timo had spun as I went past him. If he had been behind me and still racing, he would probably have beaten us because I had to back off too much because of the fuel. So, it was a pretty dramatic finish but, when it gets like that, and you win, it's such a high.
