The sudden change in weather made life interesting for everyone, and not knowing how long it would last, there was a flurry of last minute pit-stops to swap slicks for rain tyres. The last half hour saw some deft driving on the part of racers who were trying to control their cars on slick race tyres on an even slicker surface. Winner Kaffer said that "the last six minutes were real horror. There was a lot of talking on the radio, but I was so busy with myself and the track, I couldn't listen - at Laguna Seca you don't see much in the darkness."
There were nine lead changes among four cars. The pole position Creation Autosportif Reynard DBA 035/Zytek led three times, Champion Racing's Audi R8 led four times, BUTCH LEITZINGER's #16 Dyson Racing Lola EX257 AER led once, and the winning car led twice.
It was Kaffer's second ALMS victory of the season and career, and the first this year for co-driver Herbert, who has won six career ALMS races. Herbert qualified the car on the front row, but spun out on the first lap in Turn Two after being bumped by CHRIS DYSON. Herbert fell to the back but soon caught back up to the front...zero to hero. No doubt that's how he turned the fastest class race lap. Dyson and co-driver, ANDY WALLACE later retired with engine problems.
The pole position Reynard Zytek, with NICOLAS MINASSIAN and JAMIE CAMPBELL-WALTER on board, retired with a blown engine which laid down enough smoke to kill the West Nile virus at the track for the season.
The LMP2 class was won by the trio of CLINT FIELD, ROBIN LIDDELL and RICK SUTHERLAND, finishing seventh overall, twelve laps down. Liddell and Field, son of team owner JON FIELD, set the LMP2 record for the most victories in one season at six. Field now has had seven ALMS wins, while Liddell earned all of his this year in his first ALMS season. For Sutherland, who has been racing sportscars for years, it was his first ever ALMS victory. Liddell also turned the fastest race lap in the LMP2 class.
