Second in LMP2 was CLINT FIELD in #30 Intersport Lola B2K/44 Judd, co-driving with ROBIN LIDDELL and RICK SUTHERLAND. Third was JEFF BUCKNUM in the sister Miracle car. Co-driving the Lola B2K/40 AER were CHRIS McMURRY and BRYAN WILLMAN.
JAMES WEAVER remains the qualifying track record holder for the LMP2 class, set a year ago September with a time of 1min 16.555secs set in a Lola EX257-AER/MG.
OLIVIER BERETTA has the GTS pole position and eighth overall, with a time of 1min 21.697secs. He turned his best time of lap six of his seven laps. There are four cars in this class. Beretta's co-driver is OLIVER GAVIN. Their team-mate in the sister Corvette is JOHNNY O'CONNELL, who qualified second in class and tenth overall, with team-mate RON FELLOWS. Third fastest in GTS was JOHNNY MOWLEM, driving the #63 ACEMCO Motorsports Saleen S7R with team-mate TERRY BORCHELLER. But they were moved to the back of the 26-car field because it failed the stall test in post-qualifying scrutineering.
This was Beretta's 14th pole position, which ties him with Fellows for the most ALMS pole positions in any class. Beretta is going for his fourth straight victory. Watch the car closely. This will be the last time it races, as the new C6-R makes it debut next year.
The record-breaking GT pole was earned by TIMO BERNHARD, who will start #23 McKenna Porsche 911 GT3 RSR 14th overall, with a time of 1min 25.586secs. Bernhard's best time was turned on the second of his four laps. His team-mate is JORG BERGMEISTER, also of Germany, and they race for Alex Job Racing. This is the largest class, with twelve entries. Bernhard stands to win the GT class championship if he finishes sixth or better in class. AJR has 31 team victories, the most of any ALMS team. Corvette is second with 30.
All 26 entries qualified for the four hour race starting at 4pm Saturday and racing into the night - the first time ever at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.
