The fastest car line-up was much the same Saturday morning for American Le Mans practice as it was in Friday's test session at Infineon Raceway for the Infineon Technologies Grand Prix of Sonoma, with one exception.
FRANK BIELA was the fastest LMP1 driver in the #2 ADT Champion Audi R8 with a 1min 22.443secs/110.476mph lap. Friday it was his team-mate, MARCO WERNER. In the other three classes, it was the same fast driver as Friday - CLINT FIELD for Intersport in LMP2, OLIVER GAVIN for the factory Corvette team in LMGT1, and TIMO BERNHARD for Alex Job Racing in LMGT2.
In the afternoon, again it was Field and Gavin. However, BUTCH LEITZINGER pulled it on in #16 Dyson Racing Lola EX257/AER in LMP1 with a 1min 22.474secs/110.435mph effort. PATRICK LONG for Petersen Motorsports/White Lightning Racing in #31 Porsche 911 GT3 RSR took GT2 pole with a 1min 34.835secs/96.040mph lap.
It was an exciting race for the SPEED World Challenge GT Series, especially at the front of the pack. Polesitter, LOU GIGLIOTTI won in #28 LG Pro Long Tube Headers Corvette C6, but not without having a dog fight of a race. His pole time was a record-breaking 1min 39.581secs/91.463mph, his second consecutive SPEED GT pole.
It was Gigliotti's 20th career victory, now placing him third overall in the list of all-time wins, supplanting MICHAEL GALATI, with whom he had been tied.
Gigliotti runs on a shoestring budget, and to make ends meet, he rents out his car whenever possible. He raced this weekend because he couldn't find a taker. The next race is in two weeks at Portland International Raceway, and the car is already rented to DINO CRESCENTINI, much to Gigliotti's dismay.
TONY GAPLES was second in #34 Blackdog Racing Corvette C6, followed by TOMMY ARCHER in #1 3R-Racing Dodge Viper. Fourth was MICHAEL McCANN in #82 McCann Plastics Dodge Viper.
