ROBIN LIDDELL finished fifth in #66 Porsche GT3 Cup car for Jon Groom Racing after starting eleventh. Liddell then jumped out of that car and went to practice #50 Diablo Grand/Dynamic Suspensions//Pirelli Panoz Esperante GTLM with co-driver BILL AUBERLEN. Auberlen is also driving double duty this weekend. His SPEED World Challenge Touring race is Sunday afternoon an hour after the ALMS race. Auberlen will start second in a field of 29 Touring Class cars.
WOLF HENZLER got a jump on the start, moving from third to second, earning him the B&M Oil Coolers 'Cool Move of the Race Award'. He and LEIGHTON REESE raced each other furiously, until they got up too close and personal. Both ended up with flat tyres, but Henzler got in and out of the pits faster than Reese. In the process, Henzler turned the fastest lap of 1min 42.322secs/89.013mph, a record-breaker. Henzler finished seventh on the lead lap, behind BOB WOODHOUSE in #13 Woodhouse Auto Dodge Viper. Reese, who started second, was credited with a 19th place finish, six laps down, after retiring on lap 21 of the 25-lap race.
Points leader ANDY PILGRIM finished eighth, but unofficially still heads up the GT standings.
MAX PAPIS was running sixth in #16 Team Cadillac CTS-V when hit and spun out by Archer, who was then running seventh. Papis limped around from turn seven on his subsequent flat tyre, but also broke a rear suspension link. After pit lane repairs, Papis rejoined to finish 19th, ten laps down. Archer was already on a two-race probation for an incident in the Cleveland race. Archer was given additional probation for another two races, fined five points, and $3,000 for violation of SCCA Pro Racing Regulations regarding a safe pass, contact with another car, and contact while under probation.
JON GROOM started 20th and finished twelfth, earning him the Sunoco Hard Charger Award for most positions advanced.
RACER Magazine has rated the SPEED World Challenge GT Series as 'the most competitive road racing series in the world'. And GT ranks second overall in all series behind the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series. GT is the only series on the list which didn't feature cars sharing a common formula. Among the criteria cited by the magazine in the August 2005 issue are ratio of total races to number of race winners, average number of starters, average mph difference of starting grids, average percent of starters on lead lap at finish and average race margin of victory.
Saturday morning, PABLO DONOSO of won the first of two Star Mazda races this weekend.
MARCO ANDRETTI finished second, and said that, had he not driven off course, he 'coulda, woulda, shoulda' won. Andretti admitted that the 'off' cost him the race. He didn't want to talk about it afterwards. Young Andretti is running the full Star Mazda Series this season, and selected races in the Indy Racing League Menard's Infiniti Pro Series, mainly the road courses. So Saturday's runner-up finish will help a lot in terms of track time for the August IPS race, although the course won't be exactly the same. The Infiniti Pro cars run the same course as the motorcycles in the American Motorcyclists Association, which is not the same as this weekend's sportscar course.
