TERRY BORCHELLER gave ACEMCO Motorsports its first pole position with a record-breaking lap of 1min 20.307secs, causing team owner JEFF GIANGRANDE to want to do back flips. No, Giangrande didn't imitate CARL EDWARDS of NASCAR fame, but finally he might see that all his efforts might bring him his first victory. The Saleen S7R will start eighth overall. Borcheller's co-driver is JOHNNY MOWLEM.
Borcheller said that the car "was a pleasure to drive." He is fond of the 2.238-mile elevated world famous road course, saying "it's got a great rhythm. You can get into a groove that is pretty serious".
Although the Corvette championship chasers didn't score the pole, they will start second and third in class; and the #3 Compuware Corvette C6-R crew won the Klein Tools Pit Crew Challenge victory Friday afternoon. Crew chief DANNY BINKS led the charge, and the crew won $20,000. The other finalists in the contest were the other Corvette crew, the crew for #24 Alex Job Racing GT2 Porsche 911 GT3 RSR, and #79 J3 Racing, Inc. GT2 Porsche 911 GT3 RSR.
Despite all the red flags in the GT qualifying session, ROMAIN DUMAS managed to put the other Alex Job Racing Porsche on pole for Saturday's race. Dumas turned a 1min 25.406secs lap in the #23 Hyatt/Bell Micro Porsche 911 GT3 RSR. His co-driver is TIMO BERNHARD.
