After having their winning streak ended at Road Atlanta, Penske Porsche resumed their place at the front of the grid at Laguna Seca.

In the GT2 class, the Risi and PWL Ferraris were the cars to beat, with champions-elect Mika Salo and Jamie Melo scoring pole position over Lucas Luhr and Peter Dumbreck in the more distinctively liveried 430 GT.

Melo and Salo need just a single point to bring the GT2 title their way, but should they not finish, Johannes van Overbeek and Jorg Bermeister could well snatch it back from them in the Flying Lizard Porsche, although they face a tough task from third on the grid.
