Tony Kanaan believes Acura are capable to taking the fight to the dominant Porsche RS Spyders in 2008.

Tony Kanaan showed he is getting well acquainted with sportscar machinery after taking the Andretti Green Racing Acura to third place on the grid for the final round of the American Le Mans Series at Laguna Seca.

Returning to the circuit for the first time in five years, the Brazilian IndyCar Series star is also embarking on his third outing in LMP2 machine in place of NASCAR-bound Dario Franchitti.

However, despite his inexperience compared to co-driver Bryan Herta, it was Kanaan was taking the fight to the dominant Penske Porsches and while he was disappointed to miss out on a spot on the front row, he is pleased to be back.

“It is so much fun to race here. I have not been here since 2002 [in Champ Car]. So it is very exciting to come back to Laguna Seca. This is one of my favourite tracks. I look forward to racing the Acura here. It is a blast for me.”

Looking to next season, Kanaan has now called upon Acura to go into 2008 with the intention of beating the Penske cars, which have claimed all but one LMP2 victories this season.

“It was a good day for the XM Satellite Acura team today. I can see that we are improving with the setup of the car. Of course, we also are getting ready for the 2008 season because we need to work on getting closer to those Penske Porsches. I know that the Acura and HPD folks are working very hard to get this program up with the Penskes. They set a very high bar to reach.”
