As we got closer to the end of the race, I was hoping that someone else other than me would see it through to the finish. I did it last year and it is such a great feeling to cross the finish line in first place that I thought one of my team mates should do it. It was arranged for Antonio to do it, but then the rain was coming again and he got a little nervous, bless him....
So, like last year, I would do the last double stint and deal with tricky conditions to bring the car home in one piece and in first place....great!
The track was starting to get wet while I was out on slick tyres, and the team said the 'Vettes had just come in for wets. Most of the track was dry, but the part that was wet was
really wet, so in I came too. It was strange driving the dry track on wets, but the Michelin wets were fantastic, and they worked well in both conditions.
We were about three minutes ahead of the #63 but the conditions were not ideal - a mistake now would cost the race. I had a stint in the night that was really slow and I was a little worried I would be slow again with Mags out there, driving the wheels off the 'Vette to catch me. I radioed to the pits, not knowing how fast he was, and I said 'sorry guys, this is the best I can do.....'. 'Wilks', my engineer, replied 'no problem, you are ten seconds a lap quicker and catching him!'. I thought maybe I wasn't the plonker I thought I was!
Mags had destroyed his wets and he then came in for intermediates, so I was now a lap in front, but he was flying. He soon re-passed me, and off he went, but the team said to keep pushing and I knew that, if I kept it on the road, we would win. I came in for a splash of fuel, no tyres and headed out to win for the second year in a row. The team even said to keep pushing on the last lap of a 24-hour race but, when I saw the pit straight grandstand, the same emotions flooded me as last year and I crossed the line with a few wet drops in my eyes.
