Originally it was Robin Mortimer, my new boss at RPM, who recommended me to Peter to race with him in the British GT Championship and we clicked very well. The deal came together last season for a few races in a 996 Cup car and it continued into this year. Hopefully it is something that will continue into the coming seasons as well. The team is fantastic, Robin runs – in my opinion – one of the best teams in the paddock, if not the best team in the paddock. There is a good atmosphere between myself and Peter and the whole team so it is really good.
For the season ahead, my personal aims are to qualify on pole position and set fastest laps in the race. That for me, is the number one thing. For me and Peter as a team, the aim is to keep working with Peter to help him progress and get him faster and faster so hopefully at the end of the season we can get some proper results on track. To me, that is a very realistic aim to have going into the new season.
I’ve been in British GTs since 2003 and this season is definitely the most competitive that I have ever seen the championship. The whole GT3 is fantastic because the cars look like GT1 cars but are a quarter of the price to run, which makes them more accessible to teams and drivers. We have Lamborghini’s coming to join Dodge, Porsche, Ascari, Aston Martin and so on, we have quite a few professional drivers doing the championship and I think it will be the most competitive British GT season in a long time – possible the most competitive ever.
Here’s hoping we can be right in the mix come the first round at
Oulton Park.
Until then,
Matt
