Matt Griffin believes that the 2007 British GT Championship season has the potential to be the most competitive ever seen in the history of the championship.
Griffin, who won the GT Cup class back in 2003, will drive for Team RPM during the coming season in a Porsche 997, with 2007 marking the first time that GT3 specification cars have been the headline act.
That switch has seen a number of cars join the grid, with Dodge and Lamborghini set to join a grid that already features – amongst others – Aston Martin, Porsche,
Ferrari and Ascari. It means that a bumper field is set to take to the track for the opening rounds of the season at
Oulton Park with any one of a number of cars capable of fighting for victory – the whole ethos of GT3 being to balance performance between the different machines to ensure close racing.
“I've been in British GTs since 2003 and this season is definitely the most competitive that I have ever seen the championship,” Griffin said in his first exclusive
Crash.net column. “The whole GT3 is fantastic because the cars look like GT1 cars but are a quarter of the price to run, which makes them more accessible to teams and drivers. We have Lamborghini's coming to join Dodge, Porsche, Ascari, Aston Martin and so on, we have quite a few professional drivers doing the championship and I think it will be the most competitive British GT season in a long time – possible the most competitive ever.”
Griffin will be partnered for the new season by Peter Bamford, who he drove with in selected meetings towards the end of 2006. With the partnership continuing to get stronger, Griffin said he was confident that a solid season lies ahead for the pair.
