Former Fiesta champion and BTCC racer Andy Neate has been seriously injured following an accident during the Britcar 24 Hours at Silverstone.

Neate was one of the drivers taking part in the event for the Track Power Motorsport team, and was given the job of starting the #7 TVR Sagaris for the latest edition of the 24 hour event.

However, at the start of the race, pole-sitter Adam Sharpe suffered a spin as the field came round to take the start, with Neate being forced to take avoiding action and spinning to the grass on the outside of the circuit.

Having hit the wall, the TVR rebounded across the circuit towards the pitwall where Richard Dean ploughed into the car having been unsighted at the wheel of his Ginetta G50.

Neate was airlifted to hospital, where he has been put into an induced coma suffering from a serious injury to his neck.

"I would like to give you some update on Andy's condition, which indeed is very serious," his wife Sara posted in a comment on the Ten-tenths website. "Andy is in hospital very heavily sedated with a serious break to his neck. This is one of many injuries. He needs a very long operation on his neck however he is not well enough for this to take place right now.

"For our privacy I do not wish to go into too much detail but right now ever day he is here and stabilised is a bonus. He has been put into a coma for his own safety and we are spending every waking minute with him."
