Rutter column: Broken wrist, broken bikes.

Thursday, 21st June 2007

In his latest exclusive column for Crash.net, Isilon MSS Discovery Kawasaki’s Michael Rutter talks about how he raced at the Isle of Man TT with a broken scaphoid - and still got a top ten finish...

Hi guys,

The last few weeks have been a blur of racing; it has been pretty constant since Snetterton. My crash at Snetterton had a bigger impact than I had realised as I’ve discovered I’ve got a broken scaphoid. I managed to race the TT with it but it wasn’t feeling quite right so as soon as the Senior was over I headed for the hospital for a check up and that is when I realised how bad it was.

It's definitely getting better, it’s coming along although I’ve got to keep it in plaster for a few more weeks yet. I’ve got to go and have more scans on it and go from there. Hopefully I won’t have to get it pinned because I want to race at Knockhill. If I have it pinned it will be another four weeks.

I think everyone is amazed that I managed to race at the TT with a busted wrist but it wasn’t too bad to be honest! I know that sounds crazy but riding round the Isle of Man TT is not like riding round a short circuit. Mainly the weight is on your wrists during slow corners which is so painful but at the TT there are only a few slow corners and the rest are just flowing. So there are really only six or seven corners where you really struggle with it, the rest of the time it is alright and you don’t break as late as you do at British Superbikes. It is just all those things really that made it easy for me to do.

I enjoyed getting back to the TT even though we did have a few problems with the bike breaking down and that but I’d love to go back again. I really did enjoy the two weeks out there. The only race I managed to finish was the Senior and I came home in eighth which I was pleased with after a seven-year absence.

We had a number of technical problems at the TT and we’ve been on the back foot from the start of the season - we weren’t up to speed with it and it was just unfortunate with the things that went wrong. The team are now all back together and working hard. We should have new engines for Knockhill which are coming over from France and I think we will have a better time with them.
