Laverty column: No luck for the Irish.

Wednesday, 27th June 2007

In his latest exclusive column this season for Crash.net, Relentless Suzuki’s Michael Laverty talks about how his Supersport Championship lead has dwindled...

Hi Guys,

What can I say; race day at Mondello was chaos! Red flags and re-starts were the order of the day and our race turned into a mad nine lap dash. The wet weather during practice and qualifying didn’t really help matters over the weekend. Every session was wet and we were up the pointy end during most of the sessions at some point apart from the one that is actually going to decide the grid positions!

Right at the end I got bumped down to tenth but I was pretty comfy in the wet so of course it dried up for race day! My team-mate, Ian Lowry had been struggling a wee bit in the wet conditions; he was just lacking confidence after his spill at Silverstone during his wild card ride in the GSX-R Cup.

There are quite a few passing spots at Mondello but it can be a bit tricky as you sometimes have to barge in on people to get by. It has got a few opportunities for passing so I was able get through quick enough from the third row of the grid. I’ve started from the third row there before and got through quite quickly.

In the first leg of the race I felt in control and the same in the second part. I felt I had plenty left and then the red flag came out. On the final restart it was exactly the same I felt good to go but Billy McConnell had other ideas and took me down. I’m annoyed I lost so many points; I’m still leading the championship but only by five points.

The most I’ve had is a 26 point gap but that went down to 21 after Ian took five out of me at Snetterton and now this... I’m not getting too worried yet, I’ve had a bit of a settling in period with the Pirellis, and I’ve still not really found my feet with them. I’m on the pace but not as good a pace as I would like to be especially over the full race distance. We need to work a bit on the set up but we didn’t really get a chance due to the wet weather.
