Laverty column: Back on top.

Wednesday, 11th July 2007

In his latest exclusive column this season for Crash.net, Relentless Suzuki's Michael Laverty tells us about his Supersport race win at Knockhill which has got his championship back on track...

Hi Guys,

Now that is more like it! A race win is just what I needed. I must say the weather was really mixing things up but I felt strong all weekend and my bike, tyres and suspension were all working well.

It could have been a real tyre lottery but I decided to go with what my team manager suggested and ran a hard wet compound, which turned out to be the right thing to do. I’ve got my lead back!

Everyone is asking about my team-mate Ian Lowry as he closed right up to me in the championship. I suppose it is good, Ian has been pretty consistent this year too and he was quite lucky at Mondello to be fair, the first start he was struggling, he was only down in eighth and then he managed to get third and me not scoring brought him back up to five points off me. If I had finished the race the way it was before it was red flagged he would have been about thirty six points behind me.

It is a big turn around it is almost two races worth of points. I suppose I should be worried but I’m quite relaxed at the minute to be honest I think Dennis Hobbs could be my main rival because he has been pretty strong. I’m really watching him and keeping an eye out for Ian too as he has had a few strong races as Snetterton and Oulton Park so I’ll be keeping an eye on him. Hopefully it doesn’t turn into too much more than a team rivalry and an in team battle for the points at the end. We get on good, it is tougher for Philip the boss trying to decide what way to work things between two riders when they are both at the top of the championship.

There will be no team orders - it is everyman for himself! Maybe at the last couple of rounds if it is between me and Dennis, then he may ask Ian to help me out or if Ian is going after the title then maybe I’ll have to help him. We will see when that comes and hopefully that won’t be an issue.
