Laverty column: Points make prizes.

Wednesday, 18th July 2007

In his latest exclusive column this season for Crash.net, Michael Laverty talks about settling for points at a water logged Oulton Park...

Hi Guys,

I can’t believe we had another wet weekend at Oulton Park, we deserve some sunshine now!

Free practice on Friday in the wet went well, I didn’t do many laps but I was pretty quick and fairly comfy. It was good and then Saturday was dry, it was our first dry session so it was a bit mad trying to go fast to qualify and trying to get the setting on the bike right! I only ended up fourth as I crashed on my qualifier otherwise I would have been faster.

I was happy with my wet setting and my dry setting so whatever the weather brought us on race day I was ready. In the race I ended up settling for safe points really. I got a bad start, I spun off the line and by the time I got through to third I was starting to have a problem with my clutch. It was making it really difficult for me to get a good feeling on corner entry so I really had to play it safe then. I just settled for the position I was in and at the end Jamie Robinson put a bit of a spurt on and passed me on the last lap. I didn’t want to risk it by pushing and losing points especially on the last lap so I settled for fourth.

All in all it wasn’t bad really, I extended my Championship lead to twenty seven points over Ian Lowry my team-mate and thirty three over Dennis Hobbs. The job was successful but you always want to win and I think I could have done but you have to play the points game and you have to use your head in those situations that is what I did. I brought it home and got the points so it was all good.

Ian, my team-mate, hasn’t had the best of luck in the wet this year; he crashed at Silverstone and crashed again at Oulton on Friday in the wet so I think his confidence in the wet just isn’t 100%. He had a bad start as well, he spun off the line but came through to finish eleventh. He is closest to me in the Championship so that benefits me but it was a tough weekend for him.
