Rea lucks out, Kiyo crashes out.

Sunday, 15th July 2007

Jonathan Rea made amends for his race one DNF by taking a commanding win at round eight of the Bennetts British Superbike Championship at Oulton Park.

An all British podium was the order of the day with Karl Harris on the Hydrex Honda finishing in second and Shane Byrne on the Stobart Honda in third place.

When the lights went out it was Rea who got the hole shot from his team-mate Ryuichi Kiyonari with Harris and Leon Haslam following in their wake. Kiyo wasted no time in passing Rea at Hizzy's chicane on the first lap while Tommy Hill's luckless weekend continued as he crashed out at Cascades.

Cal Crutchlow's race was short lived as he retired to the pit lane thumping the tank of his Rizla Suzuki on the second lap of the race. Haslam also developed a problem on this lap and crossed the line with his hand up, however he continued to circulate with a suspected gearbox problem.

After Rea's crash in race one his team-mate and race leader Kiyo decides to do exactly the same at the same corner on lap four of race two. He had a huge high side at Druids and was very lucky not to be hit by his bike as it followed him along the grass. This fall gave the lead straight to Rea who still had Harris and Walker on his tail.

Leon Camier on the Bike Animal Honda was running in a safe fourth place until the Stobart pair of Tom Sykes and Byrne decided to mug him. They both dived under him and he ran wide out over the grass, he was lucky to keep his machine upright and rejoin the race although a couple of places further back.

Rea was pulling away like he did at Knockhill and by mid race distance he was 8secs clear of second place man Harris. Walker ran on at Lodge corner on lap eight, he almost saved it but tipped off as the bike lost its momentum in the gravel. He managed to hold the clutch in and keep the engine running so he could rejoin the race. His effort was well worth it as he picked up eighth place. Gregorio Lavilla salvaged a tenth place finish following his nasty crash in race one.

As Rea came over the line he mimicked a pair of binoculars looking behind him for the rest of the pack as he was 12.103sec clear of Harris.
