British Superbikes » Camier: My first thought was to get fit again.

Wednesday, 14th November 2007

Leon Camier suffered, without doubt, the biggest smash of the 2007 season when he crashed on the Mountain at Cadwell Park damaging his left leg badly. Since then his sole focus has been on getting fit and getting back on a bike as he exclusively told Crash.net.

It could well have been a career ending crash but not getting back on a bike was simply not an option. “I never even thought about that,” said the relaxed Camier. “My first thought was to get fit again; it never worried me at all, I really didn't see it as a big problem.”

His positive attitude has helped his recovery and he has since gone on to sign a deal with the Airwaves Ducati for 2008. Camier did have some talks with the team ahead of the end of the year but they were at the mercy of Ducati and the pistons issue before any progress could be made. “Things really started moving once Airwaves had been told by Ducati that they would build the bikes to meet the BSB regulations. Once they knew they would be racing they got in touch and it was game on,” he grinned.

The team were not concerned about signing an injured rider as he went on to say: “My injury wasn't a worry for them or me as long as it was healing and getting better. I had an X-ray at Brands Hatch and you could see the bone was growing back. I'm going for another X-ray tomorrow (15th November) with Toby Branfoot the BSB doctor and we should see more of an improvement.”

Camier is now able to walk with just one crutch and can put weight on his injured leg. “Training wise I'm getting there, my leg just needs to take more weight. My main cardio work is out is cycling. I've been strengthening my leg using resistance bands and doing various exercises,” he said.

He is concentrating very hard on recovery and is thrilled with him new team, “It is spot on being with Airwaves Ducati, they are one of the most professional teams in the paddock. I t couldn't be better really, I just want to get started with them as I'm really bored at the moment!” he concluded.
