"Shakey" was first in every session at Brands a fortnight ago before the snow came and though fourth in the timesheets here on Friday, the 2003 champion is again looking consistent and quick on the Airwaves 1098R V-twin bike.
Both Byrne and Leon Camier were able to complete a large number of laps of the abrasive, super fast circuit, enabling them to get a lock on the correct tyre choice.
Byrne was in the middle of a race run when he had to pull in to pit as there were spots of rain but is happy with progress.
"I have done a lot of laps and worked hard with the tyres," he said. "I know some of the others have gone a bit quicker in the second session but my race pace is there and I'm confident for qualifying."
By contrast, Camier ended his day acknowledging that he needed to relax to find more time.
The youngster from Ashford started the day seventh in the first session but dropped to 12th in session two, only managing to chop a few tenths off his lap time.
"I have had better days and am looking to improve a lot tomorrow," said the 21-year-old.
"I've struggled today and physically not felt happy." Readers may remember that Camier damaged his shoulder in a pre-season testing crash and this injury is still hampering him.
"I was trying too hard today, tomorrow I just need to chill out a bit and ride the bike the way I know I can," he said.
