Although he ended that lap down in 13th place, a series of blistering quick laps allowed him to move back through the field, with the Ducati lapping quicker than in qualifying as Byrne moved towards the front.

Having made his mistake on lap two, it only took ten laps for Byrne to close the gap down to the leaders with a series of fine overtaking moves at the challenging circuit and having taken the lead from Crutchlow once again, he then took the win when the race was red-flagged after three riders – including Crutchlow – fell on lap 13.

"In the second race I made a mistake and touched the white line under braking and lost the front wheel," he said. "Luckily it came back but then I had to come from 14th or something to try and catch the boys back up. I got such a great rhythm going and we'd made some changes to the bike that meant it was fantastic.

"All thanks really go to the Airwaves Ducati team as they gave me a great bike to ride in the wet and a great bike to ride in the dry. They make my job the easy part as they spend hours getting the bikes ready and then I have the 20 minutes of glory! They did a great and I'm also pleased for Leon to get two podiums. All in all, it's been a great weekend for the team."

The double success was Byrne's first since 2003, when he then went on to secure the BSB crown for the Monstermob Ducati team and he admitted that he was keen to try and continue that kind of form through the remainder of the season.

"Funnily enough, the start to the season this time around is exactly the same as I had with Monstermob back in 2003," he said. "I had a win and a second, then a double win, a double win, a double win, a win and whatever else it was.

"If we can emulate that kind of form then I'm sure Colin [Wright, team boss] will keep smiling!"
