Cal thanks Coventry City!

Monday, 12th May 2008

Cal Crutchlow keeps his BSB title campaign alive with a little help from Coventry City and a bloke called Toby.

The HM Plant Honda rider suffered a fall only 6 days ago at Oulton Park while in contention for a second BSB win.

The 2006 Supersport champion dislocated his right ankle in the fall and has spent most of the last week getting help from the Coventry City football team physio to make it possible for him to ride the Fireblade at Brand Hatch.

"These two results are very good as I try and keep this title push alive," said Crutchlow after the races. "After the crash we came here just looking for points. I hung in there despite the issues and championships are made of that kind of determination."

The 22-year-old did as much as he could to aid his cause, leading both races despite the obvious discomfort from the ankle and though his biggest rival Shane Byrne swept to a win in the first race, Crutchlow was in first place as a red flag brought the second race to a premature conclusion.

"The first race was long and hard for me," he revealed. "The ankle went straight onto ice after the race and it's damn hard work leading for 16 laps like that I can tell you! By the end of the second race I was just happy to see the flag!"

The football link is interesting as Crutchlow had trials with some teams as a youngster and Coventry City's team physio Damien Delahunty helped Cal get his ankle in shape for the weekend.

"I have to say a huge thankyou to Coventry City, Damien has done some excellent work to get me here and I must also mention Toby Branfoot the BSB medical delegate for BSB who has been a huge help this weekend too.

"I'm off to the NW200 now for a bit of relaxation and to rest the ankle."

Team mate Leon Haslam had another weekend of bad luck that robbed him of vital championship points as Byrne runs away with the BSB points lead.

The Derbysire rider got a bad start in the first race that dropped him away from the leaders to an eventual fourth. Haslam led the second race before a mistake at Surtees forced him onto the run off area to a recovering sixth.
