Byrne, Brands Hatch BSB 2008

British Superbikes » Byrne annoyed but still leading.

Monday, 12th May 2008

Shane Byrne came away from Brands Hatch with an increased series lead, but a champion's will to win is fierce. He wanted the double!

Byrne managed a win and a second place at the sun kissed Kent venue where he famously won two World Superbike races against the world's best in 2003 on his way to the BSB crown.

But the racers desire was obvious in post race interviews and comments. Byrne wants to win races for his team and for himself and a couple of bad starts here forced him to ride really hard to get his results at the Airwaves Ducati team's home circuit.

The former Fast Bikes magazine road tester took a superb win in race one, proving again that he and the bike are the clear pacesetters in race conditions. A duff start dropped him to sixth but 'Shakey' yet again proved quicker and more consistent than his rivals to win another race.

Byrne's second race was trickier, he was invloved in an early inter-Ducati scrap with Michael Rutter and team-mate Leon Camier befiore chasing down the leading pair of Tom Sykes of Cal Crutchlow.

His progress to the front looked inevitable until a pace car and red flag period stopped Byrne in his tracks.

"If I am honest I am slightly disappointed with that second place," said Byrne. "I was a little concerned about the restart because I had just passed Tom when the pace car came out so to be on the safe side I dropped back behind him again.

"The bike was absolutely flying this weekend, we were by far the fastest two riders on track and that is testament to the GSE Racing team who have worked so hard all weekend. I really wanted to give them another double but it wasn't to be."

Byrne now leads the BSB series by 44 poimts.

Airwaves Ducati team-mate Leon Camier was finally able to show the talent he has at Brands, rid of the pre season shoulder injury the youngster was often able to match Byrne's pace and but for some bad luck would have been able to score a first double podium.
