GSE Racing team manager Colin Wright has added weight to the rumour that the team are considering a return to the World Superbike Championship in 2009, but added no formal discussions have taken place just yet.
Further to comments made by lead rider Shane Byrne to
Crash.net last month when he hinted he would be happy to graduate to World Superbikes in familiar territory, Wright admitted that it is something they have designs on.
With GSE set to open talks with Byrne about extending their working relationship into 2009, Wright claims the team are still in the process of deciding where they see the team in the future.
"What Shane said at Mallory was absolutely correct," he told
Crash.net Radio. “We hope in the next six to eight weeks to be able to confirm or approach Shane regarding 2009.
"We don't know what direction that will be, whether it is British or World Superbikes and quite a big say will come from Airwaves, but we are looking forward to that discussion."
Indeed, much of the decision is likely to hinge on the actions of primary sponsor Airwaves, which has backed the GSE Racing team since 2005 when they returned to BSB racing.
If not, Wright is happy to let Byrne progress onto another World Superbike team, namely Ducati Xerox as has been rumoured.
"I told Shane myself, if he is approached by a factory team, then we would love it for him to get into a discussion with them," he said. "If he wanted to go, then we would happily let him go.
"Having said that, I think Shane is going to wait for GSE Racing to decide what they are doing next year because I know both riders are happy where they are."
