ACU Academy Manager Dave Luscombe has added himself to the congratulations for Tom Sykes, who broke his Bennetts British Superbike Championship duck at
Oulton Park last weekend.
The Rizla Suzuki rider scored his maiden win at the Cheshire circuit from third on the grid before following that up with a second victory later in the day.
One of the original ACU Road Race Academy riders, Tom has risen through the ranks since 2000 when he was aged 14. from 125GP with New Era Club to Junior Superstock, where he was runner-up in 2002, to British Supersport, Sykes has plenty of experience under his belt for a 22-year-old.
Stepping up to British Superbieks in 2007, Sykes collected the Rookie of the Year Award with Stobart Motorsport Honda after finishing sixth overall in the standings. Now up to third in the championship with Suzuki, Luscombe was proud to see one of his protégés progressing.
“It is very rewarding seeing an ACU Academy rider progress through the various Championships and onto a factory supported machine. Tom has worked incredibly hard to be in the position he is now and the ACU send their congratulations on his first and second victory in the British Superbike Championship and wish him well for the future.
“Whilst Tom was with the Road Race Academy he was always eager to learn from others, but now he is equally happy to pass his knowledge onto others and assisted the ACU Road Race Coaches in selecting this year's Academy ‘students'.”
