Tom Sykes may have won three BSB races this season, but the Rizla Suzuki racer has been unable to ride on a public road - until now.

Sykes recently took a trip down to Crescent Suzuki's base in Verwood, Dorset, hooking up with Maverick Training to complete his CBT before going on to pass his direct access test over the four-day intensive course.

Normally used to travelling at speeds of up to 180mph on track, Sykes quickly settled into road legal speeds, learning of the similar levels of concentration needed to ride on the road safely.

"Many thanks to Mike at Maverick Training. He really looked after me and offered some proper training, giving me the confidence to ride on the road safely," said Tom. "It's a very different discipline to what I'm used to, but I really enjoyed it."

Sykes will be back up to full racing speed this weekend at Brands Hatch, when he will be aiming to overturn Leon Haslam's 18 point advantage and secure second in the 2008 BSB standings.

Sykes will move to WSBK with Yamaha in 2009.
