Martyn Bell: The best yet.

Wednesday, 6th September 2006

In his latest column for Crash.net, Martyn Bell looks back over the eighth round of the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship at Knockhill, and his best weekend yet since joining the series at the start of the year.

It got a bit silly again in race two and I ran over Jason Plato’s steering arm and punctured the oil cooler in the gearbox at the end after his accident, so I had smoke coming into the cockpit and we had that to mend. It’s a good job it happened on the last lap or the car would have needed a gearbox for sure. I was radioing in and I nearly got myself towed in on the slowing down lap because it was so bad, but I limped it back and it went out for the next race and it was ok.

In the last race I was running with the front pack until the Safety Car came out and I was comfortable running with them. The lap times were consistent again and as the season comes towards an end we are really getting to grips with the car, but with every car I’ve had, it has taken me a season to get used to it. Hopefully we’ll be on it in the last two rounds and then into next season as well.

I’m quite pleased with how well we how well we performed at Knockhill, when you consider that it is tight and twisty and shouldn’t really have suited the BMW. I’m really pleased with the lap-times and the results come when you get smooth and confident with the car. Every outing we have, the confidence grows and it will be interesting to back-to-back my lap-times from Brands at the start of the season and my times at Brands in three weeks time – that will be interesting.

Knockhill was a tough circuit to learn, it’s a bit like Blackpool Pleasure Beach, but I’ve enjoyed my weekend and I think the team is upbeat and happy. We don’t always look at lap-times, we look at consistency – and our consistency is there. The Dunlop guys are coming over and telling us that we are getting it right with the tyres and the car is controllable, it no longer wants to throw me off anymore. I was getting a cheer through Clark when I was hanging the back out and I think the crowd like us!
