I can't put into words how much of a boost that podium finish was. The confidence boost it gives you to know that you can race with the guys you have been watching for the past few years, and that you can beat them, is an awesome feeling. The second race was really tight and at the start of it I was quite settled and was prepared to take third place, but then I started to reel Tom [Chilton] in and have a bit of a go at him. We had a good battle for position from that point and we have had a few of those in the last two rounds!
Of course the podium meant I had to carry ballast in the final race, and – for the laps I did – it did feel different.
The team had told me what to expect and said that it would damage it a little bit everywhere and that is exactly what it was like that. I found the first few laps quite hard to adjust but the car comes on quite steady through the race and seems to finish strong. It’s a shame really as the car was just coming back to me when I retired and I feel we might have been able to push on a bit. But these things happen and there is nothing you can do about it.
Now I head to
Thruxton for the third round next weekend and a first win there would be nice wouldn’t it! However, if I can stay consistently inside the top five and sneak onto the podium then I would be ecstatic. It’s a championship at the end of the day and points make prizes.
Until then,
Tom
