The race start is always key; if you can make up a few places off the line it’s obviously going to help. The
BMW as everyone knows is extremely quick off the line, so if we can qualify relatively high up the grid we can generally translate that into a top two position at the start, and that’s exactly what happened in race three at Oulton when I went straight into the lead from row two.
Obviously
Jason Plato who was chasing me is extremely experienced, and in some ways it’s quite nice having someone like that behind you because you know they’re not going to do something stupid. Jason is pretty fair and we’ve had some good, clean battles throughout the season. We had a little bit of an altercation at
Snetterton when he wouldn’t let me through and we made contact, but at Oulton it was fine. You have to just forget who it is; these guys are all very, very good drivers but at the end of the day they are just names and that’s how I see it. You simply have to switch off from all that and make sure you don’t bang any mistakes in. If you keep it very consistent it’s going to make it hard for anybody to get past you.
Taking the chequered flag to win at the end of the race was fantastic, a great buzz for all the people in the team. There’s so much effort and time that goes in to getting the car to the circuit – we’re a very small team without any full-time staff – so it was a great reward for everyone involved. The reason everyone is here is because they’re passionate about it, and that win was for all of them.
