Round 6: Neal returns to winners circle.

Sunday, 13th April 2008

Former champion secures first Vauxhall win in final Rockingham race.

When the race restarted, there was heartache for Doyle who crashed out of tenth place at Deene after outbraking himself and made contact with the tyre wall while out front, Turkington was now under real pressure from behind from a charging Chilton – chasing a first win in more than two seasons. On lap 14, he dived down the inside with a forceful mood at Deene, but then promptly ran wide at Yentwood to allow not only Turkington to reclaim the lead, but also allow Jackson and Jones through. Neal then followed them past his former team-mate but Chilton ended the lap having only dropped to fourth after Jackson tried to go round the outside of Turkington into Tarzan but got a slight nudge from the Team RAC BMW that was enough to see him go off into the gravel and retirement.

The man on a mission was now clearly Neal, with the double champion revelling in the conditions. On lap 15, he took second from Jones at Deene, and then on he following lap he made his move on Turkington through the long banked curve at turn one, making the move stick as the pair dropped down onto the infield. Turkington fought back immediately on the run to Yentwood but a textbook move down the inside from the Vauxhall man put him back ahead at Tarzan.

Turkington appeared to be struggling with his car round turn one and Jones took second in a similar move to the one Neal had pulled a lap earlier. Again however, Turkington fought back and when he made it past the Leon, Chilton was also able to nip through into third place. On the final lap, Chilton then went for second at Deene and edged ahead of Turkington who tried to come back at the Honda into Yentwood. However, the Northern Irishman got a wheel on the grass on the inside which saw him then slide wide and Chilton, Jones, Gordon Shedden and Fabrizio Giovanardi all managed to pass the BMW.
