Eurotech: Victory!

Monday, 12th May 2008

In the latest Eurotech/John Guest Racing column for Crash.net, Andrew Jordan looks back at a storming weekend at Donington Park where he secured two Independent victories in the third round of the HiQ MSA British Touring Car Championship.

The highs of race one and two at Donington Park outweigh the low that followed in race three by far.

In race one, we were running as third Independent going into the final lap. Stephen Jelley went off at the Old Hairpin and I got a run on Steven Kane going up the hill to McLeans as he had been held up a bit by Jelley spinning. I got him coming out of the corner and while he gave me the squeeze, he also gave me room. Some people might have come across and taken us both off, but it was nice that he gave me the room and showed me respect.

Into Coppice I had to stop it on the apex so he couldn’t get a run on me and then coming down the straight into the final chicane, I was telling myself 'Don’t outbrake yourself now!'. I covered the inside and probably braked a bit early just to be sure, but I held on for the win.

I think my Rallycross background helps me a little when the conditions are a bit slippery, but in the second race, I didn’t have the pace to go with the factory guys. I could see Adam Jones was a bit behind me and there was no need to chase the factory cars when you don’t have the pace for it as you’ll make a mistake and go off. So that made it two wins from two. I’m comfortable with the car out of shape and Rallycross has helped me with that. As I see it, when it rains, it rains, and I’m comfortable competing in the wet.

In the third race we were running in third overall early on, but the car was very snappy. I lost the back end through McLeans and although I nailed the throttle to try and save it, the car just went off to the right. It is one of those things though; we just needed to get more tyre temperature a bit earlier on. You have to try and go with the guys ahead and we couldn’t afford to hold back as there was a train of cars behind us. While it was disappointing in the final race, we showed well on the John Guest Raceday and to get two wins for them was awesome.
