Martyn Bell: Preparing for the big time.

Wednesday, 5th April 2006

"Every time I go out on track the confidence goes up and I’m sure we will find the time that we are losing. I just want to go away from Brands Hatch after making my debut in the BTCC with a smile on my face and then we can focus on improving as the season goes on" - Martyn Bell.

For sure the media day was a productive day, I think we really benefited from finally getting some dry testing. We can go away and check the telemetry – or the telemetry we have because it went down mid-way through the afternoon – and we can sit at home and think ‘we just need to do this and we just need to do that’. Then we can come back here fighting fit for the opening round and hopefully improve our times and move up the order.

Being out with everyone else gives us a marker as we know now that we need to find another second or second and a half to be in the middle of the Independents. It’s a good guideline for us and we can work on that. We’ve said from the moment that we saw the calendar that Brands Hatch and Mondello were the circuits where we shouldn’t be judged and I think me and the car will come into our own when we go to Oulton Park, Thruxton and beyond. We will do what we can in these opening races, get them under our belt and then see where we stand. I think it’s mainly me getting used to the car, because it feels quick enough and it is strong but at Brands Hatch I’m just struggling on one part of the circuit and that is what I need to work on.

My confidence in the car is growing and has improved no end. I’m confident in changing direction with the car as I’m on the other side compared to what I’ve been used to and I’m starting to learn track position and where I need to be in a left hand drive car. However I think it will become second nature once I get more track time in the car – I don’t see it being an issue.

Every time I go out on track, maybe with the exception of Croft, the confidence goes up and I’m sure we will find the time that we are losing. In all honesty we have to find it if we want to make a good account of ourselves.

However I just want to go away from Brands Hatch after making my debut in the BTCC with a smile on my face and then we can focus on improving as the season goes on.

Fingers crossed that this first weekend goes to plan, till next time
