Martyn Bell: Looking for the positives.

Tuesday, 6th June 2006

In his latest column for Crash.net, Martyn Bell looks back over the fourth round of the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship at Thruxton, and a hectic weekend for the Geoff Steel Racing team.

We worked through the night to put some new Moton suspension on that we got from Andy Priaulx and his team and then went into the first race with some blind settings. The guys from Dunlop looked at the tyres and said they are working better so we were looking forward to the second race where we knew we could put in some sensible laps and had a decent set-up but the driveshaft broke as we left the line. The replacements we had weren’t the right ones so it was game over – even after looking under all the BMW’s in the car park to see if we could borrow one!

That first race though was really good and I think the circuit commentators even said during the race that my battle with Adam Jones was the focal point as it was so entertaining. It was really good and we were swapping places and lining each other up all the time. At the start, Fiona got it wrong round the back and I almost had to park as a result. She was going towards Jason Hughes and I thought ‘Hughes is gonna get a big bill in a minute’ and then she started coming towards me and I thought ‘Bloody hell, I’m gonna get a big bill!’

It meant both Jason and I had to park it and the Lexus got past but we caught him up again. The ironic thing is that I was getting the blue flags on the last lap so I thought I’ll move over and there was Vauxhall coming as well so as I let the quicker car past, Fiona came through too! It meant I lost the place but never mind – these things happen.

Now we have a bit of a break but things don’t get quieter. We have some shows to go to with the car and have some sponsors to talk to, both old and new, to try and boost our spares package. We’ll also use up some of our testing days and hope to go to Croft with a good handle on the suspension and put on a good show for the remainder of the season.
