'One of the most satisfying I've been involved in' says series director – and next season could be even better!

Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship series director Alan Gow has labelled the 2007 season as one of the most satisfying he has been involved in during his time at the head of the series.

The season saw Fabrizio Giovanardi lift the BTCC title for the first time after a season long battle with Jason Plato that went right to the wire, while Team RAC driver Colin Turkington was embroiled in a battle just as tight with Mat Jackson and Mike Jordan for the Independents' title.

In all, more than 30 drivers took to the grid during the season while eight different people took to the top step of the podium – including series debutants Mat Jackson and Tom Onslow-Cole – and Gow admitted it was a campaign that had more than lived up to expectations.

“This has been a season full of excitement, unpredictability, surprises and high drama and, for me personally, one of the most satisfying seasons I've ever had the pleasure of being in charge of,” he said. “The BTCC remains by far the biggest and most professional race championship in Britain and, despite the rivalries, the camaraderie among our teams in the paddock is fantastic.”

Gow added that he was delighted at how well the introduction of Super 2000 machinery had been during the 2007 season, with the majority if cars running to the same technical regulations found in the World Touring Car Championship.

However, Gow was quick to point out that the older BTC-spec machines still have a part to play in the series, with Mike Jordan in particular having shown how competitive the cars can continue to be.

“I am extremely impressed at how quickly our teams have adapted to S2000,” he said. “It should be noted that all 30 championship rounds in 2007 were won by S2000 cars. If anything, the cars look better, produce closer racing and are more identifiable for the hundreds of thousands of fans who have come and watched our races trackside this year.
