Tom Onslow-Cole continued to be the man to beat after setting the pace during the second free practice ahead of the latest rounds of the HiQ MSA British Touring Car Championship at Donington Park.

At a circuit where he has always run well in the past, the VX Racing man improved on his pace from the opening session to set a quickest time of 1min 12.104secs which saw him little more than a tenth of a second clear of Jason Plato. With Darren Turner third in the second Leon TDi, the set-up gamble that the SEAT Sport UK team planned to use for the third meeting of the year seemingly working around the sweeping East Midlands circuit.

With the Vectra also performing strongly, Matt Neal was fourth quickest and in a closely fought session, there was barely a second covering the double champion down to 16th place Steven Kane.

Behind Neal in fourth, Team Halfords pairing Tom Chilton and Gordon Shedden were fifth and sixth ahead of the BMW of Colin Turkington and the hugely impressive Andrew Jordan who was the second quickest Independent runner in his John Guest Racing Honda Integra.

Reigning champion Fabrizio Giovanardi was ninth fastest, while Mike Jordan – carrying ‘Old Git' on the second John Guest car this weekend – rounded out the top ten.

Elsewhere, Stephen Jelley was eleventh fastest in the second RAC BMW ahead of Mat Jackson and Adam Jones. The Robertshaw Chevrolets in the hands of Matt Allison and Harry Vaulkhard completed the top 15.

The session itself saw further problems for Chris Stockton as he stopped on track and will now go into qualifying without any serious time at the wheel of his BTC Racing SEAT Toledo while Michael Doyle was also unable to set a time at the wheel of the InTune Racing Honda Civic.
