Tom Chilton moved to the head of the pack during the second free practice session for the HiQ MSA British Touring Car Championship at
Thruxton as Team Halfords set the pace at the high-speed Hampshire circuit.
Chilton, who has started on pole twice at Thruxton in the past, posted a time of 1min 18.383secs during the session which – although slightly slower than the time managed by Fabrizio Giovanardi in FP1 – was enough to see him on top of the pile when the chequered flag flew.
Chilton ended the session ahead of Team Halfords team-mate Gordon Shedden although the Scot was the second person of the day to suffer a front-left puncture that led to him returning slowly to the pits. He was only a tenth of a second slower than Chilton while
Mat Jackson made his move up the timesheets to finish the session in third place having been outside the top ten in first practice.
Darren Turner led the SEAT diesel brigade for the second session in a row with the fourth quickest time although both he and team-mate
Jason Plato – who finished eighth – appeared to be struggling with oversteer through the final chicane throughout the session.
Behind Turner,
Tom Onslow-Cole was fifth ahead of
Colin Turkington, with
Matt Neal settling into seventh place. After Plato, Andy Jordan and Adam Jones rounded out the top ten.
During the session, Neal spun at the final chicane with Shedden then taking to the kerbs to avoid him, while Harry Vaulkhard took a trip across the grass round the back of the circuit and was forced back into the pits for repairs.
