The Arkas Racing with Sunshine.co.uk team has been left with work to do overnight after Ekrut Kizilirmak was involved in a heavy accident during qualifying for the latest rounds of the HiQ MSA British Touring Car Championship at
Croft.
The Turkish driver, who destroyed his car in a shunt at
Donington Park earlier in the month, was on his first flying lap in the Astra Sport Hatch when he got two wheels on the grass coming out of the Chicane.
Despite trying to regain control of the car, Erkut ended up spinning into the tyre wall on the run to Tower, sustaining heavy damage to the right rear and putting him out of the session on the spot. The Tech-Speed run team will now work long into the night to try and ensure he lines up on the grid tomorrow.
"I had a bit of understeer in the car and got two wheels on the grass," he told
Crash.net. "I tried to correct it but the wobble got bigger and I lost control. It's one of those things that happens; the guys are working on it now and while the body doesn't look good hopefully the chassis is ok. I went in backwards so at least that saved the engine...
"We'll have to wait and see how it goes but my pace is improving as the accidents have been quicker than last year!"
Team-mate Martyn Bell qualified in 21st place in the sister car.
