Colin Turkington says he remains focused on trying to secure a maiden HiQ MSA British Touring Car Championship title as the series prepares to resume racing early next month at
Snetterton.
The Team RAC driver enjoyed his best ever weekend in the series earlier this month at
Croft, taking a double victory that allowed him to climb up to fifth in the championship standings.
Those wins mean that only title leader Fabrizio Giovanardi has won on more occasions than the Northern Irishman in the opening half of the season, with the Italian currently 47 points ahead of Turkington in the standings.
Turkington also lies well placed to defend his Independents' championship standings with Adam Jones only five points ahead in the Team Aircool SEAT – with Turkington focused on trying to secure double championship success in the second half of the year.
"It's been a mixed start to the season," he told
Crash.net. "We've had three wins and some strong weekends – especially the last two – but we've had some weekends where the car hasn't worked so well. At
Donington Park there was a massive amount of rain on the track and we didn't get the performance we hoped for. All in all though, we are still in contention for both championships at the half way point.
"Most importantly, we want to try and defend the Independents' title but I want to also win the overall title. Whether this is the year or not, I don't know, as Fabrizio is quite a bit ahead. But you never know and have to keep trying. The circuits coming up are ones where I went well last year so we are confident for the start of the second half."
Next on the calendar is a trip to Snetterton, which also hosts a two-day BTCC test this week, and with the
BMW 320si having run well there last year, Turkington said he was hopeful of starting the second half of the year in style.
