Jason Plato may have taken a double win last time out at
Snetterton, but fans of the British Touring Car Championship have voted Motorbase Performance's Steven Kane as the second winner of the Champagne Moment award created by series sponsors HiQ.
Kane polled over 50 per cent of the votes logged on the official HiQ website following his storming drive to second place in the final race of the weekend, taking the place near the start and then producing a fine drive to hold off the challenge of defending champion Fabrizio Giovanardi.
It marked Kane's first podium finish since moving into the BTCC and the first podium proper for the Motorbase squad, with its only previous top-three finish coming when Dave Pinkney inherited a place on the podium following someone elses exclusion at
Knockhill back in 2006.
“First of all I would like to say a big thank you to all the fans who took part in the competition and who voted for me,” Kane said. “It's a great honour to receive this award and with it recognition for what we've been doing on the track.
“The Motorbase team has been working exceptionally hard over the past few events to improve the car and that has helped both Rob Collard and I perform to the best of our ability. I hope everyone who enjoyed the last round at Snetterton will continue to follow the championship and Motorbase Performance team for the rest of the season.”
Mark Jones of Warrington was one of the many fans who voted for Kane after his Snetterton heroics, and he was picked at random from the list of entrants to present a magnum of champagne to Kane this Sunday at
Oulton Park.
