Norisring 2008: Green celebrates.

Sunday, 29th June 2008

Jamie Green secures victory in the latest round of the DTM at the Norisring to lead a Mercedes 1-2.

Jamie Green held off pressure from fellow Mercedes man – and pole-sitter – Bruno Spengler to secure his second win of the DTM season at the Norisring.

The Briton, who also won at Mugello as the wheel of his Mercedes C-Klasse, took the lead from his Canadian rival at the start and was able to then fend off anything his rivals could throw at his to extend Mercedes' winning run at the street circuit to six.

The main scare for Green came following his second pit-stop, when he pulled away from his pit box with the refuelling can still attached to his car. However, it became dislodged as he arrived at turn one and from that point on, Green was able to hold off Spengler for the win – eventually taking the flag less than half a second ahead.

“That was a tough race,” Green said afterwards. “At some points, Bruno came really close. I had some trouble with the balance of my car and made two slight mistakes in the chicane. Probably, that was motivating for Bruno. Two years ago, I had a chance of winning here, but back then, it didn't happen. I am proud that I now have the strength to get it all right. I have probably beaten my demons and have won four of the last seven races. Today, my car was very good.”

Behind the Mercedes pair, current points leader Timo Scheider was able to take to the podium in third place to lead the Audi challenge but only after a mistake on the final lap of the race by Mattias Ekstrom that saw him drop to fourth.

He settled for the position, barely 2.5secs behind Green, while Gary Paffett rounded out the top five in the first of the 2007-spec machines. That wasn't for long however as the Briton was excluded post-race for his car being underweight following scrutineering checks.

That promoted Paul di Resta to fifth place, the Scot having run in a podium position early on before a spin saw him drop down the order, while Bernd Schneider completed the top six. Tom Kristensen and Mattias Lauda rounded out the points scoring positions.
