Adam Carroll's defection to the GP2 Series has opened the door again for Markus Winkelhock to race in the DTM, the German returning to action straight away at Mugello.

Winkelhock was enlisted to replace Tom Kristensen at the EuroSpeedway and at Brands Hatch and although he failed to score any points, his quick adaption from single-seaters back to touring cars was nonetheless praised by team boss Dr Wolfgang Ullrich.

With Carroll having decided to ditch his plans of competing in both DTM and GP2 following his victory at Silverstone, Winkelhock steps into the 2005-specification Futurecom TME Audi alongside at Vanina Ickx at the Tuscany circuit this weekend.

Although it is unclear as to whether this is a deal that could be extended to the end of the season, the Spyker F1 test driver made a solid start in free testing by claiming the 14th fastest time to be second quickest of the two-year old machines.
