"Qualifying was quite tough for me," noted Tomczyk. "Throughout the weekend, I haven't been happy, neither with the car nor with the track.

"In fact, I still am not very happy. Of course, I am all the more happy with making it onto the second grid row with two Audis in front of me. That is more than I had expected."

Bruno Spengler rounded out the top five and was the fastest Mercedes-Benz driver, closely followed by Paul di Resta and Jamie Green, two other drivers' with current-spec AMG Mercedes C-Class cars.

The Canadian however, was not pleased: "Fifth place on the grid is very disappointing. We could have been further up," he noted.

"I am still starting from the third row though and I am on the clean line. From here anything is possible with a good start. I firmly believe in our potential of still making it onto the podium tomorrow."

Reigning DTM champion Mattias Ekström had to settle for eighth, with Markus Winkelhock and Bernd Schneider ninth and tenth respectively, followed by Mike Rockenfeller, Gary Paffett and Ralf Schumacher.

Ralf was extremely happy with his second qualifying session in the DTM and while he only fractionally missed out on getting into Q2 at Hockenheim, this time the boot was on the other foot and he edged through, just 0.048 seconds up on fellow Mercedes runner, Marco Engel.

In the end the German also made Q3 too, as Alexandre Premat's crash in the second heat meant all 14 remaining drivers were allowed to take part in the final session - although Premat himself was unable to do a lap after his accident and consequently will start from 14th, one spot behind Ralf.
