Bruno Spengler had the dubious honour of being the best of the Mercedes contingent on a day when the three-pointed star was comprehensively out paced by rivals Audi at Zandvoort.
With the A4 saloon filling the top four positions, Mercedes had to be content with fifth, sixth and seventh, with Spengler leading team-mates Jamie Green and Paul di Resta.
The Canadian started exactly where he finished, but crossed the line 21 seconds adrift of winner Mattias Ekstrom, a result he believes was the best he could manage in the circumstances.
“A very tough race. The Audis were faster today and although I got the maximum out of the car and myself, a better result was not possible. There are still five races ahead of us with an optimum of 50 points to be won. Nothing is decided yet.”
Jamie Green, meanwhile, was frustrated with his performance after a poor getaway saw him drop to seventh from fourth before the first corner. Although he fought back to sixth, Green was disappointed his chance of a good result disappeared before the race had barely started.
“Unfortunately I lost three positions at the start and on this track I was not able to catch up. At least I scored three points and in the overall ranking I am still in touch with the leader. Now let's do better at the Nürburgring.”
