DTM » Star rookie Jarvis 'still striving' for F1.

Tuesday, 26th August 2008

Audi star rookie Oliver Jarvis insists that he has not abandoned his dreams of making it to F1 - despite forging himself an impressive touring car career as the DTM prepares to return to Britain at Brands Hatch this weekend.

Oliver Jarvis has revealed that he has still not given up hope of one day achieving his dream of racing in Formula 1 – even if he admits to being content to ply his trade in the DTM for the time being.

The 24-year-old enjoyed an extremely promising junior single-seater career, progressing up through the ranks to finish as runner-up in the hotly-fought British F3 Series in 2006 – ahead of no less than current GP2 Series title contender Bruno Senna – and go on to triumph twice for his nation in the A1GP World Cup of Motorsport, famously securing Team Great Britain's breakthrough victory in Mexico last year.

Not only that, but as winner of the highly-prized McLaren/Autosport BRDC Young Driver of the Year award in 2005 he was given the opportunity to taste life in the truly fast lane last November, taking to the track at Silverstone in a 2006-spec McLaren-Mercedes F1 car [see separate story - click here].

Just three months later, he had been confirmed as an Audi driver in the DTM in 2008 – and even though his career path has now taken a different turn, he insists the door to the top flight is not closed.

“It was a big decision to sign for Audi and go into DTM – there's no getting away from that,” Jarvis reflected, speaking to British newspaper The Sun, “but once I made it I knew I had to put everything behind it.

“I have gone a little bit away from the usual route to F1, but my goal really is to be a professional racing driver – and that is what I am doing at the moment. I am getting paid to drive racing cars, and there are not many people out there in the world who can say that.

“Don't get me wrong – I would still like to make F1, and I am still striving for that. People have done it through the DTM, and I see no reason why not.

“At the same time, though, if my career lies with the DTM and other projects with Audi then I will be very happy if in ten years time I'm still driving a race car and still part of the Audi driver programme.”
